Don't crowd the pan!
The Cutting System 2000™ - Julia Child Edition
After working on this project for quite a while, I'm excited to share my latest cutting board creation! This isn't just any cutting board - it's a custom-engineered solution for my newly built kitchen island.
The Challenge:
I built a beautiful kitchen island with a large walnut countertop that I wanted to protect. I needed a serious cutting board - something big enough for real cooking work, with effective juice grooves. But anyone who's used large cutting boards with grooves knows the problems: food gets stuck in the grooves when you try to scrape it off, and boards this size are back-breakers when you need to carry them to the stove.
My Solution - The Cutting System 2000™:
This beast measures 17"x20"x2" in walnut with maple inlay. Here's what makes it special:
• Three sides feature fluted juice grooves that all drain into one large pocket at the side with curved sides - making cleanup a breeze
• The fourth side has NO groove - instead, it has a pocket that accepts a small plastic transfer board. I can scrape food straight onto that and carry it to the stove without breaking my back!
The Technical Stuff:
Using VCarve's new inlay software, I carved Julia Child's image with her famous reminder: "Don't crowd the pan!"
Key lesson learned: Use a 30-degree V-bit, NOT a tapered ball nose. After struggling with TBN bits and unpredictable results, I switched to a sharp V-bit and this one came out perfect!
Julia would approve. 😊
It's been getting heavy use in my kitchen, and I think it's going to work really well for years to come.
